What is Bacteriostatic Water?
Bacteriostatic Water is sterile Water for Injection containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a bacteriostatic preservative. It is the standard diluent laboratories use to reconstitute lyophilized research peptides, and the benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth so a reconstituted vial can support multi-dose use within recommended in-house windows after the first puncture.
Unlike plain sterile water, which has no preservative and is best for single-use reconstitution, bacteriostatic water’s preservative supports repeated withdrawals from the same vial. Its near-neutral pH (4.5–7.0) is compatible with the majority of research peptides, though it is not suitable for peptides known to be incompatible with benzyl alcohol — plain sterile water should be used for those. Koi supplies bacteriostatic water for laboratory reconstitution use only.

How Bacteriostatic Water Is Used
- Provides a sterile, preserved aqueous diluent for reconstituting lyophilized research peptides.
- The 0.9% benzyl alcohol acts as a bacteriostatic preservative, inhibiting bacterial growth to support multi-dose use.
- Neutral-to-slightly-acidic pH (4.5–7.0) is compatible with the majority of research peptides.
- Add the diluent slowly down the vial wall onto the lyophilized cake to limit foaming, and avoid vortexing.
- Not suitable for peptides that are incompatible with benzyl alcohol — use plain sterile water for those.
- Supports aseptic, repeatable reconstitution across an experimental series.
Why Bacteriostatic vs Sterile Water
- Plain sterile water has no preservative and is best for single-use reconstitution; bacteriostatic water supports multi-dose use over a longer window.
- The 0.9% benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth between withdrawals, supporting repeatable peptide dilution across a series.
- Multi-dose reconstitution of lyophilized research peptides for cell-culture and biochemical assays.
- Preparation of working stock solutions where a preserved diluent supports aseptic handling workflows.
- Storage of reconstituted peptide stocks within preservative-supported in-house windows.
- General laboratory reconstitution where benzyl alcohol compatibility is acceptable.
Why Buy Bacteriostatic Water from Koi Peptides?
- Every lot of Koi bacteriostatic water is sterile-filled in the United States and released against independent third-party laboratory (Freedom Diagnostics Testing) testing.
- Each lot is released against sterility and endotoxin testing, with the 0.9% benzyl alcohol content and pH confirmed.
- The lot ID is printed on every vial and ties back to a public COA library, so researchers can verify documentation before they buy and after the vial arrives.
- Orders placed before 2 PM CT ship the same business day, and shipping is free on orders over $200.
